October is finally here, and you know what that means?… It’s Foot Health Month. When was the last time you gave your feet a little TLC? We bet it’s probably been a while, considering 48% of Australians wake up with foot, heel or arch pain at least once a week.

It’s no secret that many Australians are neglecting their foot health. We think it’s time to change that by encouraging Australians to enter October feet-first. Feet fit into something much bigger than just shoes. Our foot health impacts our daily range of activities and quality of life, and can even be an indicator of serious health conditions lurking below the surface.

There are a number of conditions that impact Australians’ foot health, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Blisters and Bunions
  • Athlete’s Foot
  • In-grown toenails
  • Diabetes and arthritis

Even wearing ill-fitting shoes can negatively impact the well-being of our feet. Did you know that  only 1 in 3 Australians are wearing the right footwear? Yikes! This staggering statistic speaks volumes about just how many Australians are unknowingly damaging their feet.

One thing’s for certain, and that’s  happy feet = happy life.  But just how do you keep your feet happy? Well, read on friends, as we have all the answers below!

1. Wearing correctly fitted shoes

Ill-fitting footwear is a leading cause of foot pain amongst Australians, and causes unpleasant ailments such as plantar fasciitis, heel and ankle pain, bunions and blisters, cramping AND even causes knee, shin and back pain. But how do you know if your shoes don’t fit? It’s simple, answer yes or no to the following checklist:

  • Are you in pain, and does removing your shoes give you pain relief?
  • Do your shoes rub against your heels or toes, and cause blistering?
  • Is there enough space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe? Look for roughly 1.5cm of wriggle room.
  • Are your heels moving around your shoes when you walk on different surfaces?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, chances are you need new shoes! Ensure your feet are correctly measured and fitted in-store the next time you go shoe-shopping.

2. Wash and dry feet thoroughly

Do you wash your feet with soap and water everyday? If no, you should in order to prevent Athlete’s Foot infections! No need to get the bucket out, this can easily be done during your daily shower. However, fungal organisms thrive in damp environments, so ensure to dry your feet well after washing (especially between the toes) to prevent fungus growing in places it isn’t wanted.

3. See a podiatrist

Podiatrists are able to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of foot conditions including heel and arch pain, balance issues, foot cramping, in-grown toenails and sprains.  95% of Australians who have seen a podiatrist said their condition significantly improved thanks to the treatment they received from their podiatrist. Show your feet a little TLC by hopping onto Google and searching for local podiatrists in your area. You won’t regret it, the statistics don’t lie!
